34 left homeless in Rumphi
About 34 households have been rendered homeless after roofs of their houses were blown off by a hailstorm that blew across the Livingstonia Plateau in Rumphi District this week
This comes barely three weeks after 18 households and students at Phwezi Private Secondary Schools were left destitute by a similar disaster.
Rumphi District Police Station spokesperson, Victor Khamisi, said two people were injured and are being treated at David Gordon Memorial Hospital.
Khamisi said the other victim is 32-year-old Wisdom Kola, who is being treated as an outpatient after sustaining bruises on the left hand and the backside.
Asked on the value of the property that has been damaged, Khamisi referred us to the District Commissioner (DC)’s office, whose team was still on the ground in the affected areas of Phoka and Susa conducting assessments.
When contacted, DC Lusizi Hlane confirmed the development, saying it has also affected the University of Livingstonia and Livingstonia Community Day Secondary School (CDSS).
“A lecturer’s house has been damaged, as well as a fence and two teachers’ houses at the CDSS. We are yet to establish the value of the damaged property in monetary terms,” Hlane said
