Baby girl with albinism goes missing in Karonga

By Samuel Kalimira:

Barely a month after assailants hacked to death a person with albinism, Yasin Phiri, in Nkhata Bay District, there are no indications that targeted people may have respite.

In the latest case, a one-and-a-half-year-old baby girl with albinism is said to have gone missing in the early hours of Tuesday in Malango Village, Traditional Authority Wasambo, in Karonga District.

However, National Police spokesperson, James Kadadzera, has asked for more time before he can comment on the matter.

Group Village Head Malongo identified the girl as Eunice Nkhonjera.

“She went missing around 2am while her mother, Loness Nkhonjera, 28, was asleep. We are shocked and speechless. We all cannot understand how the criminals took the child and disappeared without anyone noticing.

“Police came and we have joined them in searching for the baby. This is sad and we, as community members, will not allow such things to continue happening,” Malongo said.

Meanwhile, Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi President, Overstone Kondowe, has condemned the incident through his Facebook page.
