Floods displace 6,300 in Chikwawa

At least 6,300 people have been rendered homeless by floods that have hit parts of Chikwawa, the district’s director of planning and development, Douglas Moffat, has confirmed.
Moffat said preliminary findings also show that the floods have affected 5,000 households in Chikuse Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Makhuwira.
The affected people are seeking shelter at a church and a hall in Tizole 2 Village, T/A Lundu, in the district.
“We expect the figures to keep on rising because the rains are still falling; so, we are working with partners to ensure that the people who have been forced to relocate, are provided with good sanitation facilities, food and tents to live in,” Moffat said.
he added that the government has engaged in a full-scale food distribution exercise targeting 42,000 households in the district.
Recently, World Vision Malawi became the first non-governmental organisation to respond to the disaster after donating relief items such as food, tents and chlorine worth K4.5 million to the affected people.
“In the long-term, we will continue working with the government and communities here to ensure all the affected people, especially women and children, receive all the support they need in terms of education, health and sanitation,” World Vision National Director, Hazel Nyathi, said.
World Vision officials have set up six other camps in different parts of Chikwawa where survivors of the floods are seeking shelter.
