Geophysical data attracts investors

The gazetting of the high resolution geophysical data has seen an increase in the number of interested investors into the country.

Department of Geological Survey Director Jalf Salima said the gazetting of the price schedule has boosted Malawi’s attractiveness in terms of exploration and mining.

“Most companies are looking for data that they can use to identify exploration targets in a specific country. The airborne survey was a way of welcoming investors by the government,” he said.

Salima said a lot of companies, both local and international, are coming forward to get the data.

“There are a lot of companies that have come forward. Currently I do not have the figure in my head but the response is very positive,” said Salima.

“The companies coming are those that are doing both exploration for mining licences and those that would like to identify areas of exploration,” said Salima.

He further said the data is not only for mining purposes but also for companies that are doing infrastructure development like construction of roads, bridges and dams.

Salima also said those doing research are welcome to use the data.

“This data is a very positive step towards the development of geosciences in the country,” he said.
