Malawi sticks to International Criminal Court
Malawi has not made a decision to leave the International Criminal Court (ICC), Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Francis Kasaila has said.
Kasaila disclosed this in an interview on Tuesday amid reports that South Africa has commenced the process of withdrawing its membership from the court.
Members of the African Union backed a proposal by Kenya to withdraw from the court during a two-day summit in February citing what they called the court’s unfair targeting of African leaders as the reason.
“The African Union only suggested that the African states leave the court but member states will make their independent decisions on the matter. It was not an order but a proposal. There is a difference because we have our sovereign powers,” Kasaila said.
He said Malawi will not be pressured to leave the ICC by its neighbours.
ICC, among other African leaders, tried Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy Vice William Ruto as well as former Liberian president Charles Taylor
South Africa’s decision comes after the country ignored the ICC’s warrant of arrest for Sudanese President, Omar Hassan Al Bashir.
