By Jameson Chauluka:
There were scuffles in Nsanje Thursday when some Malawi Congress Party (MCP) followers and other election stakeholders apprehended Nsanje Central Constituency Returning Officer, Fred Thomas, for allegedly manipulating vote results sheet.
The MCP members are said to have noticed that Thomas allegedly tippexed results sheet and inserted figures in favour of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidates.
The tippexed results sheet, which we have seen, has figures in blue ink while the original figures were in black ink.
Police have since arrested Thomas and are keeping him in custody after the MCP members pressed for justice.
MCP aspiring MP for the constituency, Kafandikhale Mandevana, who was competing against DPP’s Francis Kasaila, has vowed to press Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) for a rerun.
“The results sheets are clear that I was robbed of victory and that of my party. I am lodging a complaint with the Malawi Electoral Commission,” he said.
Nsanje Central Constituency is one of the two constituencies in the district whose results were not released by Wednesday.
The other one is Nsanje North, whose immediate past member of Parliament is Esther Mcheka-Chilenje.
At around 5 o’clock in the evening, MCP officials were still locked up in a meeting with police officers and other security personnel over the matter.
