Vice President Saulos Chilima, who is also UTM presidential candidate, has accused government ministries, departments and agencies such as Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) and Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) of “sponsoring the ruling Democratic Progressive Party” (DPP).
Chilima made the claims Sunday at a rally held at Naotcha Primary School Ground in Chilobwe.
Chilima accused the two institutions of having what he called funds for “special operations” which the two institution are pooling to support the ruling party.
“Let me warn MRA and Macra officials. You are using money for what you call special operations yet you are sponsoring the ruling party. Come May, I will hold you personally liable. I will not hesitate to put you on special trial when I become president,” he said.
Chilima said there were many government departments and agencies that were into the practice and he promised to expose them.
But Minister of Information and Technology, who is also government spokesperson, Henry Mussa, dismissed the claims as mere political rhetoric.
“It is a shame that the whole party leader and Vice President should succumb to such cheap propaganda. It is obvious his remarks are empty and without evidence. If what he claims is true, why is he not engaging the responsible authorities such as the Malawi Police and Anti-Corruption Bureau? If he has run out of words, it is better he stays quiet and call it quits,” he said.
During another rally held in Mulanje on Saturday, Chilima called on Malawians to desist from worshiping politicians who are in the business of stealing from the government.
