Some chiefs and Michael Usi’s Odya Zake Alibe Mulandu Movement coordinators in Zomba District have asked him to partner Vice-President Saulos Chilima in the forthcoming presidential election.
Senior Group Village Head Mwembele made the remarks yesterday when Usi met with some group village heads and coordinators of Odya Zake Alibe Mulandu Movement in Zomba.
Mwembele said traditional leaders are tired of problems besetting people in rural areas; and they want solutions.
Mwembele claimed that people in the country are longing for a youthful leader who can help in developing the country by introducing initiatives that can empower local people to generate their own income.
“Most of us are old, just like some leaders in government today. Because they are very old, they are not under pressure to meet their targets because they know that they will not live longer in this country,” Mwembele said.
He, therefore, urged Usi to contest during next year’s election.
But Mwembele, like other chiefs who spoke during the meeting, asked Usi to partner a clean, youthful candidate, making special mention of Chilima, who, they claimed, is being victimised by the Democratic Progressive Party leadership.
But in an interview after the meetings, Usi refused to directly comment on the possible Chilima partnership.
Instead, Usi said he is talking with several prominent young people who have passion and potential to develop the country.
“We cannot allow people to plunder government resources while we are here. We need to take charge and develop the country. I am currently talking to several people. This movement is huge and people will be shocked,” Usi said.
