A total of 10 people died Monday night on the M1 Road in Kasungu while four others were seriously injured in a road accident involving a Matours bus, registration MN 6364, and a stationary truck.

Police indicate that the bus hit a stationary truck in Mkula Village, soon after Nkhamenya Trading Centre along Kasungu-Mzimba Road, around 8:30pm.

The bus was heading to Chitipa from Lilongwe and had 66 passengers onboard.

Kasungu Police Station spokesperson Joseph Kachikho told The Daily Times yesterday that, apart from the deceased, who were yet to be identified, a total of 29 passengers, including the driver, sustained injuries.

“Upon arrival at Mkula Village, the driver was exchanging direction with an unknown vehicle and, after the exchange, he saw a broken-down vehicle in front of him.

“Due to speeding, the driver of the bus failed to control his vehicle and it hit the stationary truck and, as a result, both vehicles swerved to the extreme nearside where they stopped at a water drainage point,” Kachikho said.

The stationary ERF truck has been recorded as registration KK 4105/KA 2584.

Road Safety Alert Foundation Executive Director Joel Jere has advised drivers to be careful when driving at night.

Meanwhile, police have arrested the driver, who has been charged with causing death by reckless driving.
