11 foreigners in for Malawi Ladies Open
By Mabvuto Kambuwe:
At least 11 foreign golfers from four countries have turned up for the Malawi Ladies Golf Open which got underway at Lilongwe Golf Club Friday.
The players are from Zimbabwe, Tanzania, Zambia and Ireland. About 69 local golfers are taking part in the three-day tournament.
Ladies Golf Union of Malawi immediate past president Shilla Chinkhandwe said the tournament started well.
“We are happy that foreign golfers have turned up for the competition. Although we expected more foreign golfers, we are still satisfied with the number,” Chikhandwe said.
Despite Malawi is hosting the tournament for the first time in 30 years, Chinkhadwe said she is optimistic that local golfers would utilise home ground advantage to win the competition.
“We have great golfers who have prepared well for the tournament. We have the hope that they will bring their best game and do us proud,” she said.
Some of Malawi’s prominent golfers taking part in the tournament are Maina Mkandawire, Jochebed Mpanga, Sandra Komakechi and Ruth Mvula.
Several companies such as Old Mutual, Sunbird, Toyota Malawi, Sparc Limited and Data Com made contributions to help in the organisation of the showpiece which ends Sunday.
