11-year-old wins Charter Golf

Eleven- year-old, Marcus Chalulu, shot six-under his handicap to emerge the winner of Charter Insurance Monthly Mug at Mbawa Country Club in Bvumbwe, Thyolo District last Sunday.

The insurance company sponsored the competition, which the National Junior Golf Committee organised.

Playing off handicap 36, the highly-talented Chalulu shot 49 strokes on the front nine and 53 on the back to hit a gross of 102 and a nett of 66.

Chalulu shrugged off close contender, Carlo van der Walt, by five strokes as the latter came second with a net of 71. Going away with bronze was Darren Kuyeri who finished with 81 nett.

Speaking during prize giving ceremony, an excited Chalulu thanked the sponsor for their continued support towards junior golf development.

“I would like to thank the sponsor for their support, my mum for bringing me to golf every time and the organisers for a job well done,” Chalulu said.

In the 18 holes girls’ category, Quasira Lambart emerged the winner with 71 nett while Vanessa Mtupa came second with 82 nett. Zitha Rodrick settled for bronze with a nett of 84.

In the nine-hole boys’ category, Gibrael Lambart was the champion after posting a gross of 53 while Talumba Nthaba was tops among the girls with 61 gross.

Speaking during the prize presentation, Charter Insurance Business Development Officer, Marvin Kasambwe, urged golfers to invest in the company’s golfers’ insurance policy.

“You need to be insured as a golfer. There are so many risks that you are exposed to. As Charter Insurance, we pledge our continued support towards junior golf development. We are happy to be here and we promise to be back soon,”Kasambwe said.
