Lilongwe Police have arrested 12 Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) students for blocking roads and pelting stones at cars in protest over fee hike.
Central Region Police deputy spokesperson, Patrick Kasauka, said they arrested Jameson Binali, Philimon Mzinganjira, Ernest Kadzokoyo, Tawina Likwete, Abdul Safali, Steven Nthache, Joseph Maliko, Hopeson Mpekesa , Sapawo Aseni, Pemphero Jetela , Reuben Hibis and Noel Mulera.
“It is believed that the students were protesting issues of fees hike. As such, the students mobilised themselves and thronged Mitundu Road where they blocked the road with stones and burnt tyres. They were also pelting passing vehicles with stones, rendering the road dangerous to pass through,” he said.
Luanar city students joined their colleagues Tuesday at Bunda Campus in demonstrations that started on Monday after management raised the annual fees from K362,000 to K420,000 for generic students.
The students blocked the M1 Road and pelted vehicles with stones. The students, who have been arrested, would appear in court soon.
