13 apply for Fam technical director job

Alfred Gunda

Football Association of Malawi (Fam) has received 13 new applications for the post of technical director (TD) after re-advertising it.

Iniatially, 11 foreign and local coaches had applied for the job but Fam was apparently not impressed.

The association’s general secretary Alfred Gunda confirmed receiving 13 new applications but kept a tight lid on identities.

“The process is on-going and we will shortlist the candidates once logistical arrangements have been finalised,” Gunda said in a brief interview.

However, there are indications that both European and African coaches have applied.

Fam is looking for a highly qualified individual with a Pro-Licence and a degree in sports management.

The requirement puts local coaches out of the race as none has such qualifications.

Former Malawi National Football Team coach Kinnah Phiri recently disclosed that he had also handed in his application.

National Football Coaches Association Chairperson Aubrey Nankhuni said the process of recruiting the TD is long overdue.

“We expect the new TD to have vast knowledge on how to develop coaches and also introduce into our system modern ways of coaching. Additionally, the TD should have a clear strategic plan for the development of football,” Nankhuni said.

Early last month, Fam president Walter Nyamilandu said they would cast the net wider.

“We felt that we did not do enough research around the world to attract a wide pool of applicants. We will also approach Uefa and various football associations in Europe so that we can get the right person,” Nyamilandu said.

The post fell vacant after Fam decided against renewing John Kaputa’s contract in June this year.

Kaputa served in that capacity for eight years after replacing the late Jack Chamangwana in 2013.
