The opening week of the 2022 TNM Super League season produced 16 goals, one short of last season’s 17.

Ironically, no player scored a brace or hat-trick at the start of both this and last season.

According to statistics, the match between Karonga United and Kamuzu Barracks on Saturday was the highest-scoring game as it registered four goals at Karonga Stadium. Kamuzu Barracks won 3-1.

This was followed by Nyasa Big Bullets’ 2-1 win over rivals Mighty Wanderers, which recorded three goals at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Former Mighty Wanderers midfielder Sherry Msuku described the start of the season as a mixed bag.

“I would like to urge strikers to improve their form. They should be composed in the box and make telling runs. Teams should also be creative to help strikers get more goals,” he said.

“These are opening matches and we are hoping that strikers will make the league entertaining by scoring more goals. We expect to have a grand season as a lot of clubs have signed young talented players.”

Last season, Nyasa Big Bullets forward Hassan Kajoke netted 15 goals to win the golden boot award.
