2 die, 3 injured in Nkhata Bay road accident

A 34-year-old minibus driver and an 11 months-old baby have died while three others have escaped with serious injuries in a road accident that occurred near Kawalazi turn off in Nkhata Bay District on Sunday.

The deceased is Kelvin Kasambara, who was driving the vehicle, and hailed from Chikondawana Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Timbiri and Maxwell Kamanga from the same area in Nkhata Bay District.

Nkhata Bay police spokesperson, Kondwani James said Kasambara, who was driving a Toyota Hiace registration number BLK 3185, had on board a football team and supporters from Mpamba to Kawalazi Tea Estate.

James said there were 20 passengers on board.

“On their way back from Kawalazi Estate, immediately after Kawalazi turn off, the driver failed to negotiate a left bend and eventually lost control of the minibus. It went off the road and overturned three times.

“Following the impact, the driver and the kid died on the spot due to severe head injuries. Three other passengers, namely John Kamanga, Double Kamanga and Stellia Chirwa had fractures and deep cuts. The rest of the passengers survived with minor bruises,” he said.

The vehicle was extensively damaged and the victims have been admitted at Nkhata Bay District Hospital for treatment.

In 2019, Nkhata Bay registered an increase in road accidents which by 7.3 percent as compared to the year 2018.

At least 44 accidents were recorded in 2019 as compared to 41 in 2018.
