Two Malawian filmmakers Chisomo Kawaga and Asante Mbaimbai have graduated from the third cohort of the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF).
A total of 57 people across three academies in West, East and Southern Africa have graduated from the programme, which was created with an aim of propelling the film industry on the African continent.
Kawaga and Mbaimbai were Malawi’s successful candidates in the 2021 MTF call for entry and their graduation sees them joining the country’s previous graduates that include Jonathan Kapumba and Chimwemwe Mkwezalamba (first cohort) and Mphatso Makamo and Chisomo Livason (second cohort).
Kawaga described MTF as a vital platform for filmmakers and that she has learned a lot throughout the course.
“My experience was amazing, I got the chance to meet creatives from other countries and also learn from them,” Kawaga said.
Mbaimbai said her participation in MTF gave her a chance to learn from production companies in Zambia as well as facilitators from other countries “which will make us improve our country’s film industry through the knowledge we received”
The students received qualifications accredited by the academy’s three partner universities—University of Zambia, Kenyatta University in Kenya and Pan Atlantic University in Nigeria.
MultiChoice Malawi has since congratulated Kawaga and Mbaimbai for their success in MTF cohort three and flying the country’s flag.
A press statement says MTF initiative has enjoyed continued success, thanks to its strong partnerships with renowned organisations such as NYFA, Dolby Studios, Canon, Zee World, Pan-Atlantic University in Nigeria, Kenyatta University in Kenya and University of Zambia.
MTF Academy provides a 12-month accredited programme in filmmaking and as part of their curriculum. The students participate in various courses under the tutelage of seasoned industry professionals from all over the continent, including Nigerian filmmaker Tunde Kelani and veteran Kenyan producer Appie Matere.
In another development MultiChoice Malawi says Gotv subscribers are set to have a great tele-viewing experience this month as new channels have been added to the platform to ensure customers have good value for their money.
