2 Malawi Defence Force soldiers go missing in Mulanje

Two Malawi Defence Force (MDF) soldiers who were on a mission to rescue people stranded at Nkando in Mulanje went missing Tuesday after their rescue boat capsised.
The two were part of a six-team mission assigned to perform the task.
Local Government Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda, who was on the ground at Nkando and District Commissioner for Mulanje David Gondwe, confirmed the development.
“We are hoping that the remaining soldiers will be found safe as all soldiers are putting on life-saving jackets,” Chimwendo Banda said.
Three other soldiers and one civilian managed to swim back to land while one soldier was stuck in a tree.
Minister of Defence Harry Mkandawire, accompanied by Chimwendo Banda and Finance Minister Sosten Gwengwe, Tuesday travelled to Nkando to assess the situation.
