Two of the country’s models Becky Thindwa and Monalisa Kafuwa left the country Wednesday for South Africa where they are expected to participate at the Iconic International Fashion Festival in Port Elizabeth.

Apart from the two models, fashion designer Zik Garvey will participate at the festival and is expected to leave Friday.

The team is expected back on May 24 2022.

A press statement from Fashion Association of Malawi and Models Association of Malawi says the participation of the two models at the festival was one way of growing the fashion industry in the country.

The statement says the participation of the two models follows an introduction of a fashion and talent exchange project that intends to export local fashion designers and models as well as increase international fashion enthusiasts’ participation in locally organised fashion events and programmes.

Kafuwa and Thindwa also represented Malawi at Ubunthu Fashion show in Zambia.

Garvey, who is president of Fashion Association of Malawi, said their participation at the festival has partly been sponsored by Iconic International Fashion Festival and that the other part was self-sponsored.

“The call was done on the fashion association platform and we needed to send three but the other two pulled out last minute because of the partial payment they needed to do. We expect to represent Malawi and also learn how our friends are doing things,” he said.

Garvey further said they hope to network with other people in the industry and also try to create more opportunities.

“This is for the benefit of the fashion industry in the country and we hope to have more representation next year and also participate in other fashion events within the region and beyond,” he said.

Garvey said they were expecting designers and models from other countries to also visit the country and participate in the Mzuzu Fashion Week, which failed to take place last year.

“Mzuzu Fashion Week is back this year and it will take place in October. We have started preparations and we want to engage more players to assist us. This is a hub for fashion and modelling,” he said.
