Local netballers Lauren Ngwira and Sharo Kaiche sneaked out to England last week.

Ngwira of Tigresses and Kaiche of Thunder Queens netball clubs are set to feature for top English netball side, Hertfordshire Mavericks, in a day-long British Fast5 All-Stars Tournament on Saturday.

Former Thunder coach, Mary Waya, who has been hired shooters’ mentor for Mavericks, recommended the duo to the English club.

The players left for England amid controversy after their local clubs accused Mavericks of being secretive about the transfers.

However, Thunder Coach, Christina Mkwanda-Nsinji, Wednesday said they released Kaiche following a request which Mavericks made through Netball Association of Malawi (Nam).

“We were looking for formal communication and we agreed to let her play for Mavericks on a short-term deal. We want her to clinch a professional contract,” she said.

Tigresses Team Manager, Helene Mpinganjira-Tasosa, said they did not mean to stand in the way of Ngwira.

“All we wanted was that proper procedures should be followed. We can’t instruct Nam to issue a clearance basing on hearsay. Following the official communication, we felt Lauren should take part in the day-long competition and gain exposure. She also stands a chance of securing a professional deal,” she said.

Nam General Secretary, Carol Bapu, Wednesday said they cleared the players with the blessings of Thunder and Tigresses.

Malawi’s other foreign-based netballers are Mwawi Kumwenda, who plays for Melbourne Vixens in Australia, and Joyce Mvula of Manchester Thunder in England.
