The Minister of Information Patricia Kaliati has said government will announce the names of news Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) commissioners two weeks from now as the appointing process is at an advanced stage.
Kaliati said the process of appointing the new commissioners has not left any gap at the commission arguing that there other officers present are taking care of business.
“There is no need to worry about the duration that the president has taken to appoint the commissioners, progress of work is being done and I should assure you that the new commissioners will not start from scratch. We need to verify the names and see if they qualify as stipulated by their different political parties,” Kaliati said.
She further said as government they are aware of the role these commissioners play in the electoral process and that is why government would like to make sure that transparency and accountability sees the light of the day in this process.
“We got the names of the nominees from different parties even though some parties submitted their names late. Two weeks from now we will be communicating with you the media to tell Malawians the commissioners who will take us through during the 2019 general elections,” she said.
Commenting on the matter Blantyre International University (BIU) based political scientist Joseph Maere has cautioned government to make sure the appointments are done in good time so that the electoral preparations for the next elections are not affected.
“The electoral body has been involved in the electoral reforms and other things, so the appointment of the commissioners should consider the progress of such issues, otherwise two weeks is not a huge gap that should worry the nation,” Maere said
