20 die in festive season road carnage

A total of 20 Malawians died during Christmas and New Year festivities, The Daily Times has established.

During Christmas, 11 people died on the country’s roads while, during New Year celebrations, nine people died in road accidents across the country.

Malawi Police Service deputy spokesperson Harry Namwaza Tuesday confirmed the development, saying police recorded a total of 56 accidents throughout the festive season.

Namwaza said 36 people have sustained injuries in 20 road accidents during the New Year celebrations.

“MPS reminds all road users to always comply with road traffic regulations to avoid preventable road accidents from occurring.

“During this New Year’s festive period, the number of injuries has increased as compared to 2022, when 30 people got injured. More accidents were recorded from Central West Region and South West Region, with seven and five road accidents, respectively,” he said.
