Nine games which were played in the opening weekend of the TNM Super League produced 20 goals, with Blue Eagles emerging the highest goal scorers.
Eagles beat TN Stars 4-1 at Kasungu Ground on Saturday, followed by early pace-setters, Red Lions, who netted the same number of goals in games against Dwangwa United and Mafco at Chitowe Stadium.
Eagles’ striker John Malidadi Junior, Peter Wadabwa (Be Forward Wanderers) and Royal Bokosi (Lions) hammered a brace each over the weekend.
Lions lead the standings with four points, following a 2-0 win over Dwangwa on Saturday before a two-all draw against fellow soldiers, Mafco FC, on Sunday.
The Zomba-based soldiers are unbeaten in 10 league games since last season.
Eagles are second with three points followed by defending champions, Wanderers, on the same number of points after a comeback 2-1 victory over Silver Strikers at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe on Saturday.
Wanderers Head Coach, Yasin Osman, said he was impressed with his charges’ character.
“The victory has given us confidence as we want to defend the title,” Osman said.
Nyasa Big Bullets are fourth with three points as well, having beaten Kamuzu Barracks 1-0 at Civo Stadium in Lilongwe on Sunday.
Returnees Nchalo United also collected four points from the Northern Region after beating Mzuni FC 1-0 before a 1-1 draw against Moyale Barracks on Sunday at Mzuzu Stadium.
But Nchalo were docked three points for being found guilty of match-fixing in a game against Chitipa United in the Carlsberg Cup last year.
Nchalo Head Coach, Charles Manda, said he was pleased with the good start to the league campaign.
“The players have done well. I am happy with their performance in the opening week,” Manda said.
