200 athletes register for Cape Maclear Triathlon
The first ever TNM-sponsored Cape Maclear Triathlon has received an overwhelming response with over 200 athletes registering for participation.
Jam Kaunda of Mizu Foundation, who are coordinating the event, said participants from different sporting disciplines are geared to compete for three days from this Friday in Mangochi District.
“Everything is almost ready for the first Cape Maclear Triathlon. We have over 200 athletes registered in the different disciplines,” he said.
Kaunda said games will include a 20-kilometre race for athletics, cycling, volleyball, football, swimming and canoe rowing.
“We expect this to be a well-received event, one that has never happened before on the shores of Lake Malawi, let alone in Cape Maclear. We are expecting a lot of people as well to come to support the athletes, or friends competing or to just relax and enjoy the sporting fun on the beach,” he said.
Kaunda hailed TNM for pumping in K8 million for the event.
“We hope to continue this relationship into the future, as we aim to raise even more awareness for more amazing Charitable Organisation that we want to support through Sport – including Mizu Foundation, which aims to empower the Youth through Education and Entrepreneurship,” Kaunda said.
TNM’s public relations and sponsorship manager, Limbani Nsapato, said the company is proud to partner the foundation for the event.
“It is exciting to note that in future Mizu Foundation wants to grow Triathlon to another level that will attract international athletes. This will help sell Malawi’s tourism to the outside world,” he said about the event which is expected to attract top DJ’s and music artists.
Other sponsors for the event, whose proceeds with go towards charitable causes, include DHL, Carlsberg Malawi, The Living Room and Annie’s Lodge. Further details including registration can be sourced on www. capemacleartriathlon.com.
