22 graduate in Rugby coaching

Rugby Football Union now has 22 more rugby coaches after Get Into Rugby training conducted at Saint Andrews High School in Blantyre over the weekend.

The course drew participants from as far as Mzuzu, Lilongwe, Salima, and Zomba.

Facilitator for the training, World Rugby and Rugby Africa coach, Eric Situma from Kenya, said he was impressed with the enthusiasm shown by the participants.

“They showed that they have passion for the game and want to know more,” Situma said.

Situma also hailed Rugby Football Union for its effort in developing the sport in the country.

“I am particularly impressed with the involvement of the youth in the development programmes,” he said.

“The future of the sport lies in the youth hence the need to train them in the basics of the sports.”

Rugby Football Union development officer, Russell Suter, said following the graduation of the 22, Malawi now has 51 qualified coaches.

“In all, Malawi now has 51 new rugby coaches qualified at either Get Into Rugby or Level 1. A number of coaches did both courses. This include three women,” he said.

“Sunday saw 22 coaches qualify as level 1 rugby coaches . The level 1 course is an actual qualification and coaches had to complete two online rugby courses and attend the one day intensive training session to qualify.”
