240 players battle for Coke squad
With divisional finals for this year’s Copa Coca-Cola Tournament concluded last weekend, attention goes to the national finals set for Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe from August 18 to 19.
The six educational divisions have shortlisted 240 players to prepare for the two-day event.
This means that each division has 40 players selected from various teams that competed in the historic showpiece.
Malawi Schools Sports Association (Massa) General Secretary, Blackson Malamula, last week said each division will pick 18 players for the national tournament.
“We deliberately ask the divisions to send select teams to the national finals because that is the only way we can tap the best talent from the schools. We also want to give a chance to players who were outstanding despite their teams not going far in the competition,” Malamula said.
“We are calling upon all Malawians to patronise the matches because the boys hold the future of the game. People should come and see for themselves what it takes to produce such great talent.”
South West Education Division Massa Chairperson, Evance Sulani, said his players are eager to dominate the competition.
Copa Coca-Cola is largely credited for the country’s success in football as most of the prominent players are products of the tournament.
