25 arrested for violent demos in Mchinji
Chaos broke out in Mchinji on Monday after some people hijacked a planned peaceful demonstration, throwing stones and burning tyres along M12 Road.
Police have since arrested 25 people in connection with the fracas.
The suspects were among hundreds of residents who gathered at the district’s central business area in a bid to present their petition to Mchinji District Commissioner’s offices.
Communities in the district were discontent with alleged mismanagement of funds by the council’s secretariat.
According to the Mchinji Police Spokesperson, Kaitano Lubrino, a few individuals went on to present their petition to the council’s Director of Administration, Pickford Manyungwa.
“After the group had walked peacefully to the offices and presented the document, the suspects were grieved for not earlier being communicated over logistical changes,” said Lubrino.
The mob instantly set about burning tyres and stoning the council’s offices.
Police dispersed the crowd before arresting the 25 suspects.
According to Lubrino, the suspects have since been charged with conduct likely to cause breach of peace.
