Police in Balaka have arrested three men for being found in possession of ivory weighing 3.3 kilogrammes and valued at K4 million.
The three, 49-year-old Gracious Mwivani, Chiyembekezo Majola and Lyness Makangala, both aged 34 years; all from Nyani Village in the area of Traditional Authority Malemia in Zomba, have since been charged with being found in possession of game trophies which is against Section 86(1) of the National Parks and Wildlife Act of 2004.
Balaka Police spokesperson, Edith Kachotsa, said the three were arrested during a sweeping exercise conducted on Monday night.
“The three were lodging at a certain rest-house before police on patrol pounced on them and found them with a bag containing a pair of ivory,” Kachotsa said.
She added that the seized ivory was taken to the Department of Parks and Wildlife.
