3 children drown in Zomba

Three children have drowned in Linthipe River, Zomba.
Zomba Police Station spokesperson Patricia Sipiliano has identified the children as seven-year-old Junior Lameck, seven-year-old Talandira Sitenala and eight-year-old Hannah Grey.
“On that fateful day, the three, who were in the company of Shadrick Muhammad, 12, went to the said river to swim. While there, a heavy force of water came and washed them away.
“However, Muhammad managed to come out of the waters but, unfortunately, the three drowned. Later, Muhammad reported the matter to one of the village headmen but efforts to rescue the children proved futile as they were already dead,” she said.
The matter was reported to Zomba Police Station, where police officers and a medical officer visited the scene.
“Postmortem results established that death was due to suffocation secondary to drowning,” Sipiliano said.
The three victims came from Duwa Village, Traditional Authority Mlumbe, in Zomba District.
Meanwhile, Police in the district are appealing to parents and guardians to be taking care of their children and prevent them from going to rivers for swimming sessions unaccompanied.
