Three teams are gunning for the FMB Under-20 Youth Football League title in Blantyre as the league enters week 24.

Ntopwa Super Boyz are topping the table with 55 points from 25 games while Griffin Young Stars lie second with 54 points from 24 games.

Maggie Chombo Academy are third with 54 points from 25 games.

The league’s Fixtures Secretary, Joseph Semu, said the race for the championship is turning out to be tricky and stiff.

“Of course, it is appearing to be a three-horse race but if you look at the table closely you will notice that the race is wide open to teams in the top six,” he said.

Semu said the contest for the championship will be concluded within the next six weeks.

Maggie Chombo Academy founder, Maggie Chombo Sadiki, said she was confident that her team will defend the title despite being third on the table.

“The championship is far from being decided. We will fight tooth and nail to retain it. At the start of the second round, we slumped a bit but we have recovered,” she said.

Griffin Young Stars Coach, Griffin Saenda Jnr, said it would be difficult for the team to win the title because most of the players were new.

Saenda, whose team boasts of this year’s Under 17 Cosafa Cup top goalscorer Peter Banda, said his target was to finish among top four teams.

“The race is hot and it will be a miracle if we win the league title. However, I have challenged my players to finish in the top four,” he said.
