3 people die in Lilongwe road accident

Three people have been killed in a road accident which occurred Tuesday on the newly constructed Parliament- Area 18 Round-about— Bingu National Stadium dual carriageway.
Lingadzi Police spokesperson, Gift Chitowe, said the accident occurred in the early hours of the day.
He said the accident involved a Volkswagen Polo, registration number DA 8973, which was being driven by Kondwani Mwale, and two bicycle taxis.
“The motor vehicle was coming from the direction of Area 18 Roundabout heading towards Bingu National Stadium. In the process, the driver lost control of vehicle and hit a pedal cyclist who was heading in the same direction and was carrying a passenger. Due to the impact, he swerved from left to right and, as he was returning to the left, he hit another pedal cyclist,” Chitowe said.
He said the one riding the second bicycle, who was yet to be identified, and the passenger on the first bicycle, identified as Sheila Banda, died on the spot.
Chitowe also said the one riding the first bicycle, identified as Felix Hinga, died on arrival at Kamuzu Central Hospital.
Meanwhile, the Lingadzi Police publicist has said the police have arrested Mwale.
“He is in police custody and he is expected to answer charges of causing death by reckless driving and negligence,” Chitowe said.
