30 teams for basketball tourney
At least 30 basketball teams have confirmed their participation in the second edition of Bravehearts International Basketball Challenge (BIBC) slated from March 1 to 3 in Lilongwe.
So far, 16 teams have registered in the men’s category whereas 14 are in the women’s section.
Foreign teams that have confirmed their participation include defending champions, Harare City Hornets from Zimbabwe, runners-up Napsa from Zambia, HTM Panthers (Kenya), Matero Magic (Zambia), JBC (Zimbabwe), Vixens (Zimbabwe), Mbeya Flames and West Zone 3 (both Tanzania).
Hosts Bravehearts will represent Malawi in the tournament alongside Cougars, Crazy Warriors, Bricks and Central Knights.
Organising Committee Chairperson, Lusungu Banda, said registration closes on February 10.
“More international teams have shown interest in taking part in the tournament. This is a very welcome development for us and it shows that Malawi basketball is growing. Teams that have not confirmed will leave their spots opened to other teams,” Banda said.
Cougars Board Member, Tendai Banda, whose team pulled a shocker last season by beating Hornets, confirmed that they would take part in the event.
Bravehearts hosted the first edition of the tournament last year when 10 teams took part in the event.
