The Malawi-Scotland Partnership has said 300 Malawian youths are expected to virtually participate in 2021 Conference of Parties (CoP) 26 activities.

CoP 26— which is taking place in Glasgow, Scotland— is a United Nations climate change conference that happens every year.

Malawi Scotland Partnership Board Chairperson Ann Phoya said there was a need to carry the youth along on issues of climate change.

She said the youth would help monitor and track down activities being implemented to meet targeted goals, including those on reduced global emissions into the atmosphere.

“Youths are the central part of climate change mitigation. We cannot talk about these issues and leave out the youth. This is why, this year, we decided to bring them together to participate in activities through a hub.

“These youths will be coming in a group of 60 to participate virtually in activities at the on-going conference,” Phoya said.

Gender, Community Development and Social Welfare Minister Patricia Kaliati hailed the Malawi- Scotland Partnership for the arrangement.

“For a long time, women and youths have been left behind on issues related to climate change. Time has come for the country to incorporate youths and women in climate change mitigation efforts.

“Malawi 2063 has been developed with the youth in mind. As such, having 300 youths coming together to participate in the CoP26 conference is a no mean achievement. I advise the youth to use this time wisely and learn from leaders and present what they want to happen as regards climate change,” Kaliati said.

Deputy British High Commissioner to Malawi David Pert said they would continue supporting climate change mitigation efforts.

“Climate change is a global issue that needs to be dealt with jointly. We, as a country, will make sure that we help Malawi in any way possible to deal with the problem,” Pert said.

Before the joint launch of the CoP26 Hub, the Malawi-Scotland Partnership, together with 2050 Climate Group, had a big walk from City Centre to Area 43 in Lilongwe.

CoP26 deliberations started on October 31 and end on November 12 2021.
