At least four people have died and several others have sustained serious injuries after a truck, registration number CK 2486, belonging to Almeida hit and collided with about nine vehicles in Blantyre.
Blantyre Police Station spokesperson Elizabeth Divala confirmed the development, saying the accident occurred along Magalasi Road, Chirimba.
“I can confirm that indeed four people, one of whom was a CID [Criminal Investigations Department] police officer, have died and several other passengers are receiving treatment at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital after the truck, carrying 600 bags of cement, rammed into several other vehicles on the Magalasi Road,” Divala said.
Among those who died on the spot is a man who was selling tree seedlings along the road, according to eye-witnesses.
One of the people whose vehicles were hit by the truck, minibus driver Francis Masamba, said over 10 people were hit by the truck.
“The truck hit my minibus first before hitting other vehicles along the road. Many people were injured and others have died, I actually took some of the injured and the dead in my vehicle to QECH [Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital]. I really don’t know the exact number of those who have died but I saw more than two,” Masamba said.
The Magalasi Road accident comes barely a day after at least 10 people were reported dead after a bus they were travelling in from Lilongwe to Blantyre overturned at Manjawira in Ntcheu.
