Four people died on Saturday while 10 others sustained injuries after a minibus they were travelling in overturned in Dingisako Village along the Dedza-Ntcheu stretch of the M1 Road.
Ntcheu Police Station spokesperson Rebecca Ndiwate said the road accident involved a motor vehicle, registration number NS 6938, which was being driven by a male driver from the direction of Dedza heading to Ntcheu with 16 passengers on board.
“Upon arrival at the said place, due to speeding, the rear nearside tyre burst and the vehicle overturned to the far right,” Ndiwate said.
She said the driver and two female passengers, who are yet to be identified, were pronounced dead upon arrival at Lizulu Health Centre due to severe head injuries.
“Eleven other passengers who sustained various degrees of injuries were rushed to Dedza District Hospital,” she said.
Dedza District Health Office spokesperson Mwayi Liabunya said one of the victims died on the way to Kamuzu Central Hospital, where he was referred for further medical treatment.
“Out of the 11 casualties we received, one person was in critical condition and died while being referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital. Of the remaining 10 survivors, nine have been admitted to Dedza District Hospital while one was treated as an outpatient,” Liabunya said.
Meanwhile, police in Ntcheu are appealing to people to contact their nearest police formation if any of their relatives cannot be traced.
