Holders down Mafco to move second

Holders FCB Nyasa Bullets Sunday collected maximum points after beating Salima soldiers Mafco FC 4-0 to move second on the TNM Super League log table.

Two goals apiece from Alick Lungu and Lanjesi Nkhoma at Kamuzu Stadium ensured that The People’s Team became the first team to collect maximum points with such a margin.

Apparently, last week Bullets shared a point each with Silver Strikers in their opening game, and are now second on the log table with four points.

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers are still at the helm with six points from two games.

It was, however, a sweet revenge for Bullets who last season suffered their only league defeat to Mafco at Dedza stadium.

The sloppy display in the first half only produced a goal at the time of recess.

Lungu fired a 40-metre drive as Mafco goalkeeper Blessings Kameza made no attempt to stop the ball.

After the break, Nkhoma added the second goal from the penalty spot in the 52nd minute after a Mafco defender had handled the ball in the danger zone.

Moments later, Mafco’s comeback plans suffered a blow as Zikani Sichinga’s header was ruled out for offside.

The Salima-based soldiers protested, to no avail.

Lungu was back on the score sheet with a fantastic goal which was a replica of his first but, this time, it was a 30-metre stunner that proved too hot for diving Kameza.

Nkhoma finished the afternoon’s business in the 64th minute after finishing off an interchange of passes.

It was a disjointed performance from both teams, with Bullets losing the battle in midfield where the combination of Mike Mkwate, Ernest Petro and Patrick Mwaungulu failed to produce desired results.

However, Mafco, who last week started on a high after beating Chitipa United 2-1, chased their own shadows and failed to capitalise on their physical and aerial presence.

Bullets Coach Kalisto Pasuwa said despite the victory his side has some work to do.

“Bullets is a team that is undergoing building. We only have a few regular players where others are new. We need to pull up our socks if we are to defend the league tittle,” Pasuwa said.

Mafco Coach Stereo Gondwe said the disallowed goal demoralised their players.

“We scored a proper goal which was not allowed. We do not know why. That put off our players. Almost all the decisions by the officiating panel were against us and that affected our play,” Gondwe said.

In another game, Civil Service United and Extreme are still hunting for a win in the league after playing to a one-all draw.

At Dedza Stadium, Dedza Dynamos Salima Sugar claimed a 3-2 win over Kamuzu Barracks while the Northern Region derby involving Ekwendeni Hammers and Moyale Barracks ended goalless.

On Saturday, Silver Strikers beat Blue Eagles 1-0 at Nankhaka Stadium.

Former FCB Nyasa Bullets midfielder Chimwemwe Idana scored the lone goal of the match to hand the Bankers the win.

On the same day, debutants Bangwe All Stars drew 0-0 with Mighty Wakawaka Tigers at Mpira Stadium whereas Karonga United failed to utilise home ground advantage after they drew with Chitipa United 2-2.

In another match, Sheriff Shamama and Saulosi Moyo scored for Karonga while Mabuchi Msiska and Ramadan Mntafu were on target for Chitipa.

So far, six out of 16 teams have won games in the league.
