The 2019 edition of Mr Zomba Bodybuilding and Powerlifting competition is set for this afternoon at Pa Jokala Lodge in Zomba with 44 contestants expected to fight for glory.

The contest has been an annual event since 2013 and has grown to include wrestling and a junior bodybuilding competition as curtain raisers.

The competition’s Events Manager, Bright Limani , said 32 bodybuilders and 12 powerlifters had registered to showcase their skills.

“We expect fireworks from the competitors. They have assured us that they are fully prepared to give out their best. They had enough time to train and are very enthusiastic about this contest,” Limani said.

He said they had raised stakes for winners in this year’s event with the bodybuilding champion set to pocket K110,000 and a cooker.

“The runner-up will get K80,000 while K60,000 will go to the third-placed contestant. In powerlifting, the winner will go home with K60,000 whereas the second and third-placed athletes will receive K40,000 and K30,000, respectively,” Limani said.

Othaniel Kanyenda is the current bodybuilding champion while the king of powerlifting is Kondwani Mauluka.

Kanyenda said he was eager to defend the title he won last year after stiff competition from his opponents.

“I am fully prepared for this competition. I know my opponents are also ready for this competition but I am better prepared to take them head on and retain the title. My body is in great now than ever before and there will be fireworks,” the Malawi Defence Force soldier said.

The competition has been supported financially and materially by about 11 entities.
