Khwima Gondwe, Praise Salima and Quincy Mukhwapa will represent the county in boys section with Clara Mtumbuka and Shalom Kapende competing in girls category.

Chessam Publici ty Secretary, Alfred Chimthere, said the five were selected based on their outstanding performance at the Presidential Initiative on Sports (PIS) chess tourney which was held in May this year, at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe.

“Their performance was awesome and they were the best in their categories. This is why we decided to select them,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chimthere said each chess federation is expected to feature a team comprising three boys and two girls at the forthcoming event.

“So we have picked the right team in accordance with the requirements. Chessam is currently working with Malawi National Council of Sports to finalise logistics to ensure that the team represents this country successfully,” he said.

Chessam had intended to host this tournament this year but pulled the plug due to financial constraints and advice from Africa Chess Confederation.

“We have hosted international tournaments before but with inadequate funds we felt we shouldn’t take the risk,” he said.
