Malawi Under-20 National Football Team’s Gerald Phiri-led coaching panel has dropped five Super League players from the Cosafa Youth Championship-bound squad.
Azam Tigers’ goalkeeper, William Thole, Silver Strikers’ defender Mark Fodya, midfielder Levison Maganizo, Premier Bet Wizards’ Captain Trevor Kalema and striker Patrick Phiri have been chopped from the squad.
Assistant Coach Enos Chatama insisted that the players were not dropped due to age-cheating.
Chatama said they decided against including the players after consulting Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and the National Youth Football Association on some of the players’ involvement in the qualifiers for 2014 African Youth Championship.
“We have decided to drop the players to give exposure to other players who have not played on the international stage, but they have the talent. The likes of Maganizo and Fodya were part of the Under-20 team in 2014,”Chatama said.
Meanwhile, Mike Mkwate of Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver’s Kondwani Mwaila are the only Super League players surviving in the provisional squad.
The panel is expected to announce the final squad tomorrow ahead of the team’s departure for South Africa. The tournament will kick-off on December 7 and Malawi is in Group B alongside Zimbabwe and Zambia.
