A field of more than 58 local and foreign players are expected to fight for honours in this year’s Mdina Chess tournament.
The tournament will be hosted at College of Medicine Sports Complex in Blantyre from June 14- 17.
Chess Association of Malawi Publicity Secretary, Makhosi Nyirenda, said the 58 had confirmed their participation in the tournament by Saturday, with more expected in the final week of registration.
Nyirenda said out of the registered players, eight are foreigners with the rest being locals.
“To ensure that many people register for the tournament, we first of all reduced membership fees for local players and now we have extended the registration period to June 10.
“Six of the registered players are from Zambia while two are from Zimbabwe. But we also have players from other countries who showed interest and are expected to register,” Nyirenda said.
One foreign player who has registered for the tournament is Zambian prophet, Chrispine Shankanga.
According to Nyirenda, Shankanga is an overseer of the Wake Up Foundation Church and learnt about Mdina tournament through social media.
The publicity secretary further said eight local players bound for the Batumi Olympiad in Georgia in September will compete in the Mdina tournament.
“The Olympiad squad has been paid for by Chessam presidential aspirant, Susan Namangale. This is one way of assisting their preparations for the Batumi tournament, ” Nyirenda added.
Mdina Chess tournament is sponsored by South Africa-based Malawian businessman, Tione Mdina.
