Six athletes are expected to leave the country today by road for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics qualifier slated for Zambia on Saturday.
The six—Stern Liffa, Asimenye Simwaka, Mercy Malembo, Gift Kawale Allan Chirwa (not the musician) and Sunganani Namakonje—Tuesday met with Malawi Olympic Committee (Moc) President Jappie Mhango, who encouraged them to put a spirited performance.
The squad’s coach Pachisi Nyasulu said his charges can qualify for the Olympics, having trained thoroughly.
“The athletes have been prepared mentally and physically. I hope they will be in the same spirit when we get there [Zambia]. They recently did well in Zambia. I am very confident that they will do well again. We are at the level where I wanted them to be. We also had speed workout,” he said.
Moc Treasurer General Henry Sakala, who spoke on behalf of Mhango, said the Zambia championship was an ideal platform for the squad to qualify for the Olympics.
