6 Ntcheu MPs back Peter Mutharika

Six Members of Parliament (MPs) from Ntcheu District, led by Deputy Minister of Defence Everton Chimulirenji, have come out to support President Peter Mutharika.

They have also condemned fellow parliamentarian Malison Ndau for endorsing Vice- President Saulos Chilima.

Chimulirenji told The Daily Times Tuesday that all the six MPs are surprised that Ndau is behind Chilima, who has not come in the open to declare his interest in contesting against Mutharika.

He said Ntcheu West MP, Mwayi Kamuyambeni; Ntcheu North legislator Asani Lipande; Ntcheu South parliamentarian Damson Chimalira; Ntcheu Bwanje South MP Goodwin Kanjere; Bwanje North’s Francis Mkungula and Ntcheu North East [of Chimulirenji himself] are behind the President.

“We, as MPs from Ntcheu, are behind Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika as DPP president and, come 2019 elections, he will be our torchbearer as well,” Chimulirenji said.

“Perhaps, he (Ndau) knows something that we don’t know. So, we can’t just be carried away and support Chilima. The problem is that the Vice- President himself has not told us, MPs from Ntcheu, his intention and we can’t just stand up and claim that we are behind him,” he said.

Both Kamuyambeni and Chimalira concurred with Chimulirenji.

Kamuyambeni said people like Ndau are making a mistake on Chilima, a person who does not seem to be interested in running as presidential candidate.

“We, people of Ntcheu, should have been the first ones to be briefed by Chilima himself but he hasn’t come in open to us as MPs,” Kamuyambeni said.

He, however, said they (MPs) support Chilima as Vice-President and as a son of Ntcheu, adding that they will support him as the party’s running mate during next year’s elections.

Ndau, a lawmaker from Ntcheu, on Monday confirmed that he is behind Chilima.

He becomes the fifth MP to come in the open and back the Vice-President as the DPP soap opera enters another dramatic episode.

Chimalira confirmed his support for Mutharika as claimed by Chimulirenji.

“Let me confirm that, right now, I am behind Peter Mutharika and nobody else,” Chimalira said.
