8 dead, 40 injured at Bingu National Stadium
A stampede at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe has killed 8 people and injured over 40 others.
The dead include children of ages between 5 and 12.
The chaos started when police used teargas to disperse the crowd as they attempted to push their way into the stadium to watch a match between Nyasa Big Bullets and Silver Strikers.
The match was part of the 53rd Independence Day Celebrations.
The tragic news was announced at the national prayers where President Peter Mutharika and first lady were in attendance. The first couple are due to visit the hospital.
Our reporters in Lilongwe say ambulances, police vehicles and well wishers rushed to ferry the dead bodies and the injured to Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe.
The hospital has been overwhelmed by the emergency, while family and friends of those affected have thronged the hospital to check on their loved ones.
