A eureka moment

Every day from 5am to 6 am, Airtel Malawi brings joy into my morning with free internet. Such freebie is a fantastic messenger that delivers my mail to my inboxes every daybreak. There is no better way to say “good morning”!

Airtel’s Good Morning Malawi bundle is yours to behold by simply subscribing to it from your phone. That is what I call eureka moment.

Have you ever wondered what those students were doing with their laptops along the path that descends to the basement car park at Chichiri Game store?

Those lads basked in the free TNM’s hotspot internet. TNM has been testing the technology for some time now.

There was another free hotspot at the Total’s Polytechnic Filling Station; I am not sure if it is still there. TNM will start to charge for service. You will use ordinary GSM airtime to log to the service.

Here is eureka moment, you can use your Airtel phone to access TNM’s hotspot; why not? The service uses only your Wi-Fi on the smartphone.

Your TNM number is the username on the system and TNM provides you with a temporary password so that no other persons can use your number and take your cheese away.

Thanks to the government for instituting Ministry of Information and Technology. It should rather have been called Ministry of Information Communication and Technology.

The eureka moment should have been if John Khofi had been made the minister. The Soche Technical Larry Ellison who strikingly resembles Peter Muthalika, breathes ICT.

Is the man who is warming the seat not a stranger in our midst? There was the whole database to choose from: Boster Siwande, Dan Phiri, Salim Makani, Frank Maele, Chim Longwe, Abel Kwelani or why not yours truly?

The former Ministry of Information was ambiguous; was it information as in government’s brainwashing its citizens or information as in ICT?

Driving in the remote area between Songani and the beautiful and unadulterated Machinga Mountain, you will not fail to notice the many tiny ICT centres. These are run by young entrepreneurs who offer services as WhatsApp installations.

These Young Mark zuckerbergs and Jan Kouns have small ‘servers that house massive local and international video and music files that they sell to anybody willing to pay peanuts.

This serious copyright violation can be stopped with just one eureka moment; Mpamba and Airtel Money selling music. These companies are already in it; do they not sell caller tunes?

The young entrepreneurs’ eureka moment is the reach of affordable technologies like WhatsApp to the rural masses. Using WhatsApp farmers can share notes on modern farming technologies.

I also notice similar activities in many our townships. I am animated; there is one thing that is so real, death. I am so delighted that these young minds will continue to preach the ‘gospel’ far and wide after some of us are long gone to join the departed souls like Jika Nkolokosa and Raphael Tethani.
