Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) faces a race against time to raise K4 million for four athletes bound for World Cross-Country Championship in Aarhus, Denmark, on Saturday.

AAM has earmarked Kefasi Kasiteni, Dorris Fisher (both 10km) , Jameson Tonde (8km) and Miriam Kachingwe (6km) for the 43rd edition of the championship.

However, AAM General Secretary, Frank Chitembeya, admitted pressing the panic button as the association does not have the money.

“We have exhausted the funds we received from Iaaf [International Association of Athletics Federations]. We need about K4 million to send four athletes and a coach. But if we are to send the athletes on their own, we need K3 million flying Ethiopian Airways and K3.4 million if we are to fly South African Airways,” he said.

Chi tembeya said Malawi’s delegation was supposed to leave tomorrow for Denmark.

“So, we are still keeping our fingers crossed,” he said.

Kasiteni said uncertainty surrounding the trip was not ideal for the athletes.

“We need to be sure whether we are going or not. Otherwise, we hope well-wishers will support the association,” he said.
