Abel Mwakilama’s body arrival date shifted

The body of departed Malawi under-20 national football team striker Abel Mwakilama, who died in Portugal last week, will arrive in the country next week on Friday and not this week as announced.

Flames Team Manager, James Sangala, Wednesday confirmed the development after the late Mwakilama’s former agent, Venancio Patrick, informed them about the change in the programme.

The body was expected to depart Portugal for Malawi yesterday but it has delayed due to embalming process, Sangala said.

“Yes, it is true we got communication from Patrick that the embalming process was expected to be completed on Wednesday [yesterday], so according to flight schedules, it would not have been possible to depart Portugal, which means that the date has been shifted to next week Wednesday,” Sangala said.

According to a statement in a 1-1 draw on Sunday, two weeks after Banda was named man of the match in the first-leg’s goalless draw at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

Banda said he will try his best to impress Pirates’ coaches.

“It would be a dream come true to sign for a big team like Pirates. I know it would not be easy but I am confident that things will work,” Banda said.

If successful, Banda will follow in the footsteps of compatriots Joseph Kamwendo and Chiukepo Msowoya who had stints with the Soweto giants. Ernest Mtawali also played for Pirates in 2001
