Abel tough on South Africa-based stars

MKANDAWIRE— I will do my best

Malawi women’s national football Coach, Abel Mkandawire, has overlooked seven South Africa-based players in his squad to teach them a lesson on the importance of following transfer procedures.

However, Mkandawire has recalled into his squad the team’s former captain, Salome Vinkhumbo, who is also based in South Africa.

Seven Malawian players ply their trade in Sasol Women’s League in South Africa and they include Vinkhumbo, Catherine Mtonga, Ratifer Malunjika and Alice Chimaliro.

“Yes, I know that we have some players in South Africa but I didn’t include them in the squad because they need to follow the right procedures. They need to notify Fam [Football Association of Malawi] as well as their clubs,” he said.

“It is a pity that most of them sneak out to South Africa without following transfer procedures. They deny their clubs, who spot and nurture them, compensation.”

Fam Club Licensing and Compliance Manager, Casper Jangale, who is also responsible for Transfer Matching System, said the association has no record of Malawian players in South Africa.

When quizzed about Vinkhumbo, who used to play for Blantyre Zero before trekking to South Africa, Jangale said he needed time to verify details.

Meanwhile, Skippers owner, Charles Mwenda, has said it was difficult to monitor the South Africa-based players’ performance.

“We might have a player or two capable of playing for the national team but the rest are not extraordinary. Some of them were struggling here [Malawi] whereas others went there for marriages or in search of work opportunities before switching to football,” he said.

Malawi is set to participate in the Cosafa Championship in South Africa later this month before playing against Kenya in the Olympic qualifiers next month.

The She-Flames qualified for the second round of the qualifiers after beating Mozambique 14-1 over two legs earlier this year.
