Academy starts May

Construction of Football Association of Malawi (Fam) Under-15 Academy is expected to start next month in Blantyre, the association’s Technical Director, John Kaputa, has said.

But National Youth Football Association President, Chimango Munthali, has accused Fam of sidelining his office from the project.

Kaputa confirmed the academy development during the association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Mzuzu recently.

“Fam will construct national youth academies. This will be done first in Blantyre from next month to July. It will be under Fam’s supervision,” Kaputa said.

Similar projects will also be carried out in the rest of the regions, according to Kaputa.

He declined to disclose the budget for the projects.

“I am here to just plan for the activities but Fifa will also sponsor us with football equipment and the training of coaches. Fifa officials will also come during the launch of the academy in May,” Kaputa said.

But Munthali said he was in the dark over the academy project.

“I wonder why I am not involved in this. Why is my office not aware of the issue of youth academies? My office deals with the youth, but I am not involved. I don’t know why,” he said.

In his response at the AGM, Fam President, Walter Nyamilandu, said they have not discussed the issue with other affiliates because the project is in a pilot phase.
