Accident claims three lives in Ntcheu
Three people have been killed after the pick-up vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a river in Ntcheu.
Ntcheu Police spokesperson Gift Matewere confirmed the development in a telephone interview with Malawi News.
He said the accident happened at Nachitheme Bridge just after the Salima Turn off.
“The Nissan Vanette Pick up ZA 6309 was cruising from Balaka to Ntcheu with 16 people on board and the driver lost control of it and it swayed to the left and then into the river. Three passengers died on the spot while some sustained injuries and they have been taken to Ntcheu and Balaka district hospitals,” said Matewere.
He further said the driver of the vehicle bolted just after the accident happened and the police are still looking for him.
“Our initial investigations indicate that the vehicle swayed due to over speeding and plunged into the river. This accident has happened out of lawlessness. The public should be courteous when boarding these vehicles. They have to use authorised passenger vehicles like buses and minibuses and not pick-ups,” said Matewere.
