Accidents claim 8 on New Year
Eight people died in road accidents that happened in the country on New Year’s day.
According to National Police spokesperson, James Kadadzera, nine accident were reported, seven of which were fatal.
Kadadzera said this means the country has registered more road accidents this year than last year, which recorded three accidents and six deaths.
“We registered these cases from the mid night of December 31 2016 to the midnight of January 2 2017. Eight people lost their lives while two sustained minor injuries. There is a slight rise because last year we had three road accidents which claimed six lives,” Kadadzera said.
Kadadzera attributed the rise in the road accidents and the death toll to reckless driving.
“The contributing factor is irresponsible road users. We have recorded high level of irresponsibility in these nine accidents like driving, over speeding, non-observance of road signs,” Kadadzera said.
He therefore appealed to road users to conduct themselves responsibly when on the road by observing road safety regulations and rules to reduce the occurrence of road accidents.
