Accordion player Lackess Black was the toast of the moment on Mother’s Day when he treated mothers to the best of sound at Mandevu Farm in Machinga District.
Black from Chimwendo Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kawinga in Machinga, made sure mothers had all the fun being Mother’s Day as he showed his skills on the accordion.
According to him, a person playing an accordion was called a Lodger in Ntaja in those days and that by then the instrument was common.
Black said he was inspired to play the instrument by his father.
“I admired my father who used to play this instrument. This was when I was young, I was taught until I learnt it,” he said.
Black left Ntaja, where he was playing the instrument at initiation ceremonies.
He now performs at the Village @ Mandevu Farm, a full entertainment and fun house along Zomba – Liwonde M3 Road.
While playing the accordion, Black also shows skill in traditional dances such as m’bwiza.
“I start with playing the accordion then my colleague beats a hoe to play its sound. Later another colleague plays a drum then lastly women follow with vocals in the m’bwiza dance,” Black said.
Apart from m’bwiza, there were other activities on Mother’s Day.
Mandevu Farm Band leader, Ferguson Chimtali, said it was important for them to give mothers the best since it was their day.
Charity Chitembeya in her 40s said she was impressed with the group’s performance.
“I have enjoyed the outing and I am satisfied,” Chitembeya said.
However, not only mothers enjoyed the day, kids also had their own share of activities ranging from jumping castle, face painting, see saw and treasure hunt.
The event came to a climax when Mama Mandevu brought a cake for the participants.
